The catholic church was against masturbatdion when I was young much to my detriment. Now they hardly mention it at all. Most priests do not believe it is a sin much less a mortal sin.

There are all sorts of dogmatic religious interpretations in the world today ranging from one extreme to the other, but mostly in complete opposition to masturbation. To correctly understand the subject, one must go directly to the Bible itself. The Bible doesn’t give specific dos or don’ts about every situation in life, and masturbation is one of those situations. Therefore, we must look for the proper principle as put forth by the Bible. There is only one occasion in the Bible where a man spills his semen on the ground and it is accounted to him as sin. This is the account of Onan in Genesis 38. However, taking it in context, we find that it was Onan’s duty to have sexual intercourse with his dead brother’s wife, Tamar, for the very purpose of producing offspring for his brother as was the custom in that day. In the process of doing so, when Onan came to a climax, he pulled his erection out of Tamar and spilled his semen on the ground. Since the whole purpose of the act was to produce a child, this was an act of rebellion and God took his life as a result. This had nothing to do with masturbation, as masturbation is for the purpose of relieving sexual tension. However, there is a principle put forth by the Bible that is loud and clear. This involves the use of alcoholic beverages. We are told that a little alcohol is good for the stomach, and as research shows today, it is also good for the circulatory system. However, it is also put forth that drunkenness is a sin not to be indulged in. So we find that the same act can be considered either good or bad – depending on whether it is used in moderation or in an excessive manner. Can this also be true of masturbation? God created all things in the beginning including the human sex drive. Then He stood back and said that everything He had created was very good. Adam and Eve were now told to go forth and repopulate the surface of the Earth, and of course, the element of sexual attraction between a man and woman made this a pretty easy command to follow. However, as time went on there was still the human sex drive, but young people and teenagers did not have wives to relieve themselves of the sexual tension that naturally builds up during the puberty stage of life and then continues throughout the lifetime of a healthy person. The Bible further forbids fornication, which is sex before marriage, and adultery, which is sex with someone other than your marriage partner, and homosexuality, which is sex with someone of the same gender. All of the above hold a penalty if not obeyed in the form of sexually transmitted diseases which ravage today’s world. But the human sexual urge is natural and it was made by God and declared to be good, and it begins before a person is ready for marriage. So what is one to do? God says in I Corinthians 10:13 that with every temptation that He allows, He will provide a way of escape. In the case of the human sexual urge, that way of escape is masturbation. When used in moderation and not to excess, for the purpose of relieving sexual tension, there is no penalty. As a matter of fact, modern research shows that a minimum of two orgasms from a good solid erection each week is a sign of a healthy circulatory system. Impotency is often the sign of circulatory problems. Furthermore, the Bible reveals that a little exercise is profitable to the body. Every part of our body profits from the proper level of exercise. The human reproductive system is no exception. Proper masturbation provides the needed release for built up sexual tension and gives healthy exercise to the human reproductive system at the same time. However, it should also be noted that God also tells us to have no other gods before Him. If we make excessive use of masturbation, then we have another god, and that god is between our legs and is a sin. Masturbation can even be a useful tool within marriage to relieve sexual tension when one mate has a greater sexual drive than the other mate, but should never be used to deprive one’s mate of that love and attachment which is generated by needed sexual intercourse on the marriage bed.

As a Christian, I've read all the material in the Bible that is supposed to forbid masturbation, especially the story about the "sin of Onan" in Genesis 38. I'm convinced that the story deals not with any discussion nor instruction about masturbation, but involved disobedience to a religious law that was vital to the continuation of a family. It says nothing abotu the practice of masturnation itself. I'm very invoilved in the church and very religious, but I also enjoy masturbating.

I was baptized catholic at a young age, and proceeded to be schooled in a catholic school for 11 years. In those years we grazed the topic of masterbation once or twice. Our religion class was talking about sexual sins, and masterbation didn't come up, and someone asked about it and masterbation isn't a sin. We were taught that sex between un-wed people is a sin, so I think that masterbation is like the altimative to haveing sex. Anyways if masterbation was a sin, the bible might have been more spacific to it!

HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT THE HOLY FATHER THAT WAY. NOW THAT HE IS PASSED FROM THIS LIFE, YOU BETTER BE HOPING THAT HE IS AS FORGIVING IN THE NEXT LIFE AS HE WAS IN THIS ONE. On another note, I am a 16 year old, recently converted Catholic. I masterbate everyday, somtimes several times a day. None of this is really clear about what the Catholic Church believes pertaining to masterbation. Can somone please spell it out a little better.

I am a female and I do masturbate, especially when I am close to my menstration because I really feel horny. I have been doing it since I was 12. I am a christian and I feel that it is wrong especially because I cannot masturbate without thinking of a man. I always pray that I should not but just like most people, the longest I can last is probably 2 weeks

I have read the Bible twice and see NO mention of masturbation in it AT ALL. I don't think there is anything worng with masturbating and I feel the church has done more damage than good buy placing a heavy burden on anyone for masturbating. I am a regular atender in a evangelical church have been baptised a second time of MY choosing not my parents.

I am a practising Catholic who is 18 years old. My faith is important to me. I have masturbated before but have not done so for over 5 years. it can be done! Masturbation according to the Catholic Church is a sin. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Some of the reasons that masturbation is sinful will be detailed below: 1. Natural Law: Naturally man is made to be with a woman. That is why sex works the way that it does. Sex has 2 main purposes, babies and bonding. Sex today is viewed as simply a means of pleasure. Although pleasure has a role to play when it is the only role, a persons usually gets hurt. If the purpose of sex is babies and bonding then any form of sex (oral sex, anal sex, masturbation) where life is not possible is a perversion of the sexual act. Masturbation IS having sex with yourself. Your hand is simply simulating the job of the women. Sex can only be good and holy (which is what it is since it was given by God) when it is used properly. Clearly by simply looking at human beings we can see that God did not make our hands to go on our penises. God made sex between a man and a women to bring forth children. And than God he did or else we wouldent be here. 2. for all of you non-Catholic Christians there are plenty of reasons to see masturbation as sinful from the natural law defense above. Proof of this can be seen in the Old Testament (not sure of the exact verse) when Onan was called by God to have sex with his sister-in-law and he "spilled his seed" (modern day pulling out). god killed him. while this is a stark and very extreme story i believe it shows a theologcal reference for sex as procreative. the first call for man was to "be fruitful and multiply" Also Jesus talks about not lusting. When one masturbates, one lusts. How many people think of thier parents or little syblings when they masturbate? But even if you dont lust, but taking the gift of your sexuality outside of the sexual act it is being used improperly. 3. Masturbation is also addictive. Can anything that is addictive be good for you. Once you decide to stop it can be difficult. Masturbation is hurting you in this respect. What will you do when you get married? Sure you can stop masturbating to have sex. but what happens when you are away from your wife for a while? will you masturbate then? is that good for you or for her? 4. If you masturbate and dont think it is a problem then why not be proud of it? there is a natural shame that people have, and rightfully so. It twists sex to be used so that we can feel good. for more information visit www.pureloveclub.com there is helpful and intersting information regarding purity and sex.
