This is a tough for me to answer. I believe masturbation is a biologically normal impulse most humans share. I am 33 years old and have practiced masterbation since a young teen. I started in the usual fashion, using my imagination. In time I gained access to mags(Playboy,Penthouse), the usual stuff. Eventualy I had porn videos(I remember feeling that was like heaven). As years passed by I started to notice a trend in the content I was viewing. Movies seemed to be getting much more explicit(anal,d.p.,gangbang,etc...). By my mid twenties I found the Internet. The Internet opened up a whole variety of sexual content to my eyes, a lot of it free! Still I noticed as time passed by the content was getting really explicit, more shocking, and actually pretty gross. Now as far as religious views on masturbation go, I can not comment. I am not religious, though I am spiritual. But I believe masturbation in itself is not bad. I believe it's what one thinks about or focuses on that COULD make masturbation bad. As I am married now I have come to realize that lusting for the women I see in the porn movies while I masturbate feels wrong. It feels like cheeting. Also, masturbating while viewing some of that wierd crap on the internet is not really healthy for the soul either in my opinion. Bottom line is this, I think mastubation is OK and not a sin. It's what one thinks about during masturbation that can be sinful. As for myself, I now only think of my wife.

I was raised Roman Catholic. They forbid everything. While in the Navy, I was the last guy in line to go to confession. I have very devout beliefs in my Protestant faith and have dealt with the attitude of some in my religion concerning masturbation by doing a thorough study of the subject including discussing it with several Bible scholars. The collective interpretation we have is that masturbation is a normal thing and we shouldn't heap guilt on ourselves OR OTHERS for it. It is not self-abuse...how ridiculous. It is not "the sin of Onan" as that was not only "coitus interuptus" but also disobedience of God's directive to continue his brother's line and had NOTHING to do with masturbation. It is incredibly hypocritical for some "religious" figures to condemn this act and yet practice those things specifically mentioned in the Bible as sins. My guide is the basic "in all things, moderation" so that this, as anything, doesn't become a "god" I place before Him.

As a born again Christian I think having reviewed the Bible that masturbation is a paradox. The act in itself is not wrong. However - in practice it becomes wrong because it is almost always associated with some form of impurity, fornication or pornography. It is the thought process that makes it wrong. Furthermore - in practice the repeated act of masturbation appears to accentuate those impure thoughts and acts of pornography, and fornication which are sinful. Masturbation is problematic as it seems to affect most of us at some point in time. Its problematic because of the activities and thoughts that usually become associated with it. As such it is psychologically and spiritually unhealthy. It should be avoided. Now the practice. How ! How do you resist? How do young people legimately discovering themselves avoid the practice?
